As a teenager, I listened to Tom Jones sing tunes such a "What's New Pussycat?" and heard a strong sexy voice. Than he sort of fell of my radar screen until I saw his concert at Cardiff Castle on TV when he was in his 60's. That VOICE and his charisma was still there. I was hooked. I now own several of his CD'S and this one blew me away. Gone is the big back-up band and in it's place is minimal accompaniment and the VOICE. Along with that are the lyrics that speak to life and spirit. It is a departure from his normal type of music and just further illustrates the versatility of his talent. This is a MUST HAVE for your collection.

What a surprise! Tom Jones singing spirituals! He has always had that dynamic powerful range and he always sang with soul so it is only fitting he finally record gospels. Tom seems to be soul searching in his latter years and this CD reflects it powerfully. There are some strong black influenced songs that highlight this recording "Lord Help"(my favorite),Did Trouble Me, Strange Things, "Didn't it Rain?" and Nobody's Fault but Mine. And some some standards that are done well "Ain't No Grave", "Run On" and a few strange dark poetic songs such as Dylan's "What good am I?" and "Burning Hell" with a few so so songs thrown in like "If I give My Soul" and "Don't Knock" but overall the music is very well done underneath Tom's unique approach. Some of em rock you and some have a bluesy feel and some shock you that they are coming from Tom Jones.
I love most of the cuts and the more you listen to it the more it grows on you. It is not as good by any means as 24 Hours with its powerful horns and arrangemnets but this one is almost like an experimental dark journey into a man's soul. The album cover even refelcts that and on the inside has Tom with eyes closed and hands stretched out spiritually. I hope Tom has found his peace in the Lord and keeps using his great vocal gift and i'll keep buying.

The songs and production of this record make it one of my favorites of all time. Not my favorite Tom Jones record. My favorite record, period. (That's saying a whole lot, considering how much music I have listened to, been around, and made myself.) I have been listening to this record pretty much nonstop, and though I am not a god-fearing woman, this record almost makes me wish I was.It seems to me that Ethan Johns and Tom Jones were going for a Johnny Cash/Rick Rubin-esque feel on this one, but in my opinion, they surpassed their aim. Good work, all around.

THE REVIEWS IN NEWSPAPERS AND MAGAZINES WERE EXCELLENT. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A BIG FAN OF TOM JONES AND WAS GLAD HE HAD A NEW CD THAT WAS RATED SO HIGHLY. I PURCHASED IT AND LISITENED TO IT THREE TIMES AND WAS DID NOT LIKE IT AT ALL. SORRY TOM.
